Invaders from Mars

The high command laughed at Nebulon when they read my report on this movie. They seem to think that this B movie from the 1950’s doesn’t have anything to teach us about the weaknesses of your human defence systems. They were right but Nebulon had a good time anyway.

This is little more than a 50’s B movie, complete with special effects shots that were too expensive to only show once, stock footage of tanks, and four guys in green lycra who have to run past the same pieces of cardboard set repeatedly in order to represent the alien hordes. The acting won’t set you on fire and the ending makes absolutely no sense but if you can over look this what you have is a strangely effective creep-fest which has some pretty funky visuals thrown in.

On a dark and stormy a little boy witnesses an alien saucer land in his back garden. When people start disappearing and reappearing hours later acting strangely with a far away look in their eyes. He tries to raise the alarm but surprisingly no one will believe him until he reaches the local ‘scientist’ who investigates the disturbance with ‘science’.

The great thing about 50’s movies is that, aside from the acting, the humans rely on an almost religious like evocation of science as the fixer of all problems and the government as the benevolent saviour. Science and the government are the real heroes of this movie. Nebulon laughs at your trust in your feeble institutions, but he thinks that this one is crying out for an edgy, low budget remake.
