Where can Nebulon begin with Star Trek? As a mighty space warrior it amuses me to see your puny earth ideas of what intergalactic conflict might look like. It is a shame for you that these idle day dreams bear little resemblance to the coming inferno. Your species will regret, on that fateful day, that they do not have the mighty Kirk to protect you.
Nebulon was disappointed that this franchise has been rebooted along with most of your other earth classics. There are good reasons for doing this, but is it really such a burden working within the boundaries of an existing mythos? I thought your species preached respect for history and traditions.
This film chronicles the evolution of the Enterprise crew, slowly piecing together the familiar faces and accents through a plot which twists throughout the Star Trek universe with aplomb. To give them their credit the cast of younglings do a credible job of capturing the personas of those they are supposed to be playing without just doing bad impressions. Also, aside from over indulgent lens flare, the film looks spectacular, what a shame this technology wasn't around in 1966!
The plot races along at a great rate of knots, with plenty of explosions and other viscera. The only pause for thought is the continuity shattering antics involving that classic plot device, time travel. Without wanting to give too much away, lets just say that thanks to a hole in time this movie sets itself up to trash a few hundred years of Star Trek lore and start all over again. Some have said this is a clever way to open up the franchise for future films, Nebulon sees it as just an excuse to keep on making more films without having to defer too much to the source material.
For a Star Trek fan what this film lacks though is a connection to the movies that have gone before it. I'm not trying to defend the last two entries into the franchise which I think we can all agree were pants, but that's not a justification for tearing up the past and starting again. This is a great film, it's just not a Star Trek film.
Nebulon is partly happy to see a faltering franchise receiving a new lease of life, and there is no denying this is a quality flick, but simply wanting to make a sci-fi blockbuster isn't enough reason to take over the Star Trek franchise. Couldn't JJ Abrams have made his own sci-fi film without consigning to history the lore that Star Trek fans have come to love so much? Nebulon grows angry.
Watch the skies earthmen.
